About Bluefield State College

Bluefield State College, also referred to as simply BSC, is a historically black college located in Bluefield, which is a city in Mercer County, in the US state of West Virginia, with a population of nearly 11 500 inhabitants, during the 2000 census.

BSC was established in 1895 and its motto is `Making Education Possible`. It was founded as Bluefield Colored Institute and created as a high school for the Negro youth in the nearby area. It currently offers its students, instructional programs in areas such as business, arts and sciences, engineering technologies and teacher education, including a variety of career fields. Although, Bluefield was conceived as an educational institution for Negros, today, its racial enrollment composition is dominated by the `White`, with more than 80%.

Athletics

BSC's sports teams call themselves the Big Blues and they compete in NCAA Division II, in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, in several sports, for both men and women, which include basketball, tennis, baseball, cross country, golf and volleyball. Their distinctive colors are royal blue and gold and their mascot is Big Blue.
